Environmental Working Group - Recent Email

I am a fan of the work that the Environmental Working Group (EWG) does. I use their app to check the toxic levels of many consumer products, both food and cosmetics. Over the past few years, I've transitioned to using safe/vegan/cruelty-free products, as I am interested in minimizing my exposure to substances that can cause health issues. I am on the email list for this organization, so I received the email below that I'd like to share.

Think your lipstick, toothpaste, and lotion have been tested for safety? Think again.

Cosmetics companies can put just about anything in their products, even chemicals we know aren’t safe.

The U.S. hasn’t updated its cosmetics regulations for more than 80 years, and the existing regulations are so weak that the Food and Drug Administration is powerless to require basic safety testing or ban even the most dangerous ingredients.

It’s simple: Consumers should be able to trust that the products on store shelves are safe.

Just take a look at what may be lurking in your favorite products:

  • Parabens: commonly used in foundations, moisturizers and shampoos as a preservative, these chemicals, especially “long-chained” ones, can act as estrogen and disrupt the hormone system.
  • PFAS chemicals: infamous nonstick chemicals like Teflon have been linked to serious health concerns like cancer and thyroid disease and can be found in eye shadows, sunscreen and shaving cream.
  • Phthalates: often hidden under the ingredient “fragrance,” these chemicals can disrupt the hormone system and have been associated with developmental issues in baby boys.

The email ended with a call to sign a petition to push the government to require testing and more transparency. I won't worry about linking to the petition here but wanted to bring to light some of the facts and urge all of our members to know what's going on in their bodies.
