This is the time when people start asking themselves, “what’s my new year’s resolution?”
Because 80% of new year’s resolutions fail by February, I am asking you to take a different route and really “peel the onion” to get to the essence of why you want to achieve X, what’s holding you back and how to get there sustainably.
First up, determine your “why.” For example, your goal may be to lose twenty pounds. OK, what would that mean to you? Maybe it’s that you will set a good example for your kids. Or you will be able to go hiking with your spouse on your next vacation. Or it will bring an increased sense of confidence. Visualize what it will look like and how meaningful it will be. When motivation takes a hit (it will), remember your why. Bonus points if you post it somewhere you see it each day.
Next, determine the “sub goals” that are undermining your main goals. For instance, your goal is to lose weight, but you also have a sub-goal of wanting to eat whatever you want at restaurants several times per week. Or you have a sub-goal of enjoying wine with your partner each night. You may be doing the work in the gym, but what lifestyle factors are holding you back?
Lastly, think small. Many goals fail because they are too big. Realize that small milestones make up the journey to something big, so focus on those. Instead of setting a BHAG (big, hairy, audacious goal), you could come up with quarterly mini-goals.
Losing weight may look like this:
If you made each mini goal a habit each quarter, carried the habit over and added a new one, you are GOLDEN!
