Rosanne is organizing a food drive for Fellsmere Elementary’s "Backpack Program". This program identifies food-insecure children and sends them home on weekends with food to ensure their family has something to eat. This program desperately needs help, as there just isn't enough food to go around.
Indian River County ranks 17th in the state with 33% of our kids being identified as food insecure. Fellsmere is particularly in bad shape.
So, what can you do?
Donate items like pasta, rice, cereal, canned vegetables, stuffing mix, boxed potatoes, soup, juices, water, oatmeal, spaghetti sauce, granola bars, etc. We are collecting the food at the gym. This is a great opportunity to clean out your pantry of non-perishable foods. Or, you can pick up some things next time you are at the store. Publix has bins with "buy one get one free" products near the front of the store. Or you can get gift certificates so families can buy things like turkeys for Thanksgiving.
I feel fortunate to be able to focus my diet on organics and Paleo…lots of people are simply focused on survival!
If you'd like to participate, please drop off items by November 17th. The food will be especially appreciated during this holiday season.
