This is our first installment in a series of guest posts written by some of our members. The first is from Gina Karshner. Believe me when I say that the world would be a better place if humans were more like her. She’s one of the most positive, hard-working and compassionate people we’ve ever known. When she first started, she struggled with proper movements and only wore long-sleeved shirts, no matter the weather. After six years of consistency, Gina has improved in every aspect of fitness and she rocks a tank top with the most enviable arms! Here are Gina’s words…
At 52 years old, I joined Vero Strength + Conditioning, and it’s THE BEST decision I have ever made. Madonna’s arms (she has great arms and is older than me!) and the 5:00 am class were my inspiration; however, at the time, I had no idea the impact it would have on my life. I am a single mom and when I started at the gym six years ago my son, Jack, was in middle school. Jack was very active in football (fall, winter, spring and summer) so I loved the 5:00 am class option, as my after work time was all for him.
When I first started, my box jumps were on a 4-inch step platform, I could not do a pull-up, double-under, rope climb, toes-to-bar, let alone know the proper way to hold a barbell. That all has changed, which has made me stronger both physically and mentally. Since then, I have achieved things like strict pull-ups and handstand push-ups and, overall, I am stronger and more mobile. Plus, I love my arms!
For me, consistency is the key. Just showing up, doing the work, listening to the coaches and trusting them helps me reach my goals. Sometimes I would just show up and only do mobility to work on my weaknesses. I also took advantage of the barbell classes, nutrition classes and special events held at the gym.
I love the new challenges I sometimes face as well as the people I see when I am there. I’ve made so many new friends and have learned so much from other gym members. I have loved being a part of, and benefiting from, Vero Strength. I know that whatever Wendy and Rob program and do for their members will only make us stronger, healthier people.
